Samantha Castellas is an English-born Australian emerging artist who lives and works in Melbourne on Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung land and has been cultivating her predominantly sculptural practice since 2015. Castellas has presented group exhibitions at RMIT Graduate Exhibitions (2020 and 2019); RMIT Ray Area Display (2019); George Paton Gallery (2017); Meat Market Gallery (2016) and Knox Community Arts Centre (2016). Furthermore, she has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (with Honours) at RMIT University, where she is currently undertaking a Masters of Fine Art.
Castellas makes art to connect to people. It is a form of communication and self-expression. For her, there isn't anything better or more challenging than being able to communicate a memory. Sharing memories is a way of connecting with other people. Everybody has their memories and personal stories; Castellas finds this fascinating when she has created something that sparks a memory shared between people. Working with sculptural form, Castellas incorporates colour, texture, and items sourced from the artist's domestic environment to give discarded items a new purpose and vitality. Samantha Castellas believes in the importance of seeing the possibility and magic in the mundane.
