Joseph La Pira is an emerging realist artist.
His strength lies in his highly sensitive eye, and ability to recognize the subtle progressions of colour, temperature and value. In his own words “capture the mood, and the play of light as it touches the form”
Joseph’s aim is to create artworks that display a high level of skill and craftsmanship; and to represent the sitter’s beauty in a modern-expressive and realist way.
Although he has been pursuing his artistic calling from an early age, the last 3 years has seen his desire to create art grow, from a flickering candle to a burning flame. He has endured countless hours in front of the easel and many, many hours drawing and painting the live model.
His relentless work ethic came to fruition, when he was recognized with “highly commended” awards at the 2015 Camberwell Art Show and the 2015 Box Hill Art Show.
His painting process starts with a few lines and marks on the canvas, to find the gesture and proportions. He then progresses to laying in a thin wash of colour hues, usually warmer and darker than what he sees. This forms the foundation of the painting. He then builds the image with a series of thin and thick layers of paint, whilst searching for the eventual relationships of values, colour and temperature.
Joseph takes great inspiration from frequent visits to some of the best art galleries and museums both in Australia and Europe, to view the original works of the old masters and contemporary artists.
He continues to take workshops with some of Australia most respected master artists, to refine his drawing and painting skills from life; as he strives to take the quality of his work to a higher level.
His most important objective is to share his vision, make a connection, and leave the viewer with a lasting impression.
